What is Dyslexia?
Each individual with dyslexia is unique, and so will have their own combination of strengths and challenges.

Dyslexia is a set of processing difficulties which mainly affect how people learn to read, write and spell.

Dyslexia can affect other skills such aspects of maths (remembering times tables, sequencing, telling the time), reading comprehension, organisational skills.

Dyslexia is estimated to affect one in ten people.

Dyslexia can run in families.

It is on a continuum, some people will find their dyslexia has a severe impact while for others it is mild. It can occur across the intellectual range.

It is lifelong, people do not grow out of it, however teaching approaches and strategies can help to reduce the impact.

People with dyslexia often have strengths in other areas, such as problem solving and creativity.
Common traits of dyslexia include:
-
Poor phonological awareness (the ability to manipulate speech sounds)
-
Mispronunciations
-
Slow processing speed
-
Poor short-term memory
-
Poor sequencing (days of the week, months, times tables)
-
Spelling errors (reversals, muddled words, phonetic spelling, difficulties with homophones)
-
Difficulty with reading aloud

A young person with dyslexia may not exhibit all of these traits
